Mother Cows Leaving Their Calves With a ‘Babysitter’ Proves It Really Does Take a Village

Spotting horses and cows in their fields is one of the greatest perks of being a passenger in the car. It’s impossible not to point them out, especially when there’s a baby cow! Unless there’s traffic, however, it’s hard to get a good look at these adorable animals.

On the other hand, ranchers like @_cornfedcowgirl get plenty of time to watch their cows and learn about their habits. She recently noticed that her herd seemed to elect ‘babysitters’ to watch over all the calves, and it couldn’t possibly be any cuter. After all, it takes a village!

baby calves! Those babysitters must be exhausted at the end of a long shift, but it’s nice to know that mama cows get much-needed breaks. But how do they decide who the nanny cow is?

“My blind cow is the designated babysitter,” shared @jaimeehand. That must make for a fun time! It doesn’t seem like calves can get into much trouble besides getting the zoomies and annoying each other, but a blind nanny still wouldn’t be most parents’ first choice.

And then there are @caseyellen88’s cows, who don’t even need their sitter to be the same species. She wrote, “I was fixing a fence one time, and our cows did that to me unknowingly. I turned around, and I was stuck with a bunch of babies, and I saw all the heifers’ way out in the field.”

Talk about being opportunistic! Other ranchers shared similar stories about their cows’ childcare situation, and it truly never gets old. After all, who wouldn’t want to care for an adorable baby cow?

Brahman Cows

As several viewers noticed, the cows in this video look different than the Jersey and dairy cows most people are used to. These are Brahman cows, which are Brahman cows’ excess skin and effective sweat glands help keep them cool.

Watching Brahman cows open a calf daycare shows that many cattle species engage in this group parenting behavior. Not only is that fascinating, but it’s also incredibly cute!
